While it will be a long time before planes as big as a B747 or A380 regularly call on Darwin they will occasionally drop in when needed.
Darwin International Airport experienced its first ever visit from an A380 last night when Qantas flight QF1 en-route from Sydney to London, via Singapore made a medical emergency stop. Due to its strategic location, Darwin is a frequent stopover point between Australia and Asia for aircraft needing to make emergency landings for medical or technical reasons. Last week a Qantas flight QF5 from Sydney to Frankfurt, via Singapore, Boeing 747, made an overnight stop in Darwin when a burning odor enveloped the cabin en-route.
