Philippine Airlines has announced that from 16 November to 16 January their three times per week Manila-Darwin-Brisbane service will upsize from A320 to A321. This is a positive sign but the downside maybe that as even larger A330 planes come into service with PAL that they might switch to direct flights to Brisbane and bypass Darwin altogether. As PAL is unable to carry domestic passengers between Darwin and Brisbane, the flights rely on a the majority of passengers transiting through Darwin to be economical. Anecdotally it is understood that most passengers do transit through Darwin, making it virtually a technical stop.
